Newark Recent Arrests Database

Newark recent arrests are booked by two different police agencies. The Newark Police Department covers the city at large. The University of Delaware Police covers the UDel campus, which sits inside Newark. Both departments file cases into the Delaware court system, and arrests booked through the state route into DELJIS. To search a Newark arrest, start with the Delaware Judiciary CourtConnect portal, then check the Newark Police press release page for the charge details and bail amount. This page covers each step for finding Newark recent arrests.

Newark Police Recent Arrests

The Newark Police Department (NPD) handles patrol, investigations, and bookings for the city. Arrests fall in every category: theft, robbery, firearm charges, drug cases, DUI, shoplifting, and resisting arrest. A recent NPD press release listed a 25-year-old Newark man arrested on more than a dozen charges including attempted robbery in the first degree, two counts of possession of a firearm during commission of a felony, and three counts of carrying a concealed deadly weapon. Bail in that case was $372,000 cash.

NPD publishes its own press release database. The Newark Police Press site lays out each arrest with the name, age, charges, bail amount, and committing court. Each release also carries the standard presumption-of-innocence disclaimer.

For quick city news items, the Newark City newsflash police section pulls in briefer updates. The newsflash archive goes back several years, with juvenile case details redacted under privacy rules. Arraignment happens through Justice of the Peace Court 2 or 11, with custody usually at Howard R. Young Correctional Institution in Wilmington.

Newark Police Records Unit

The Newark Police records division handles every incident report and crash report the department writes. Under Delaware law, only the victim listed on a crime report can get a victim's copy. The first copy is free. Extra copies cost $20 each.

The NPD Records Unit page has the online request form.

Non-victims can only get crime reports through a subpoena or other legal process. Police reports are NOT subject to release under the Delaware Freedom of Information Act, so you have to use the records unit procedure. Photo ID is required.

Crash report fees:

  • Standard collision report: $20
  • Serious injury or fatal collision report: $60
  • Victim's first copy of crime report: free
  • Additional victim's copies: $20 each

Records office hours are Monday through Friday, 8:30 AM to 5:00 PM. Call (302) 366-7100 and press option 3.

University of Delaware Police and Arrest Logs

UDel has its own sworn police force with jurisdiction on and near the Newark campus. Under the Jeanne Clery Campus Safety Act, UDel Police publishes a Daily Crime Log.

The UDel Daily Crime Log lists campus incidents reported to the police.

The log is not real time. It updates as campus resources allow. The data source is the daily crime report prepared each day from incidents reported to UDel Police. Clery categories include criminal homicide, sexual assault, robbery, aggravated assault, burglary, motor vehicle theft, arson, liquor law violations, drug violations, and weapons violations.

UDel also shares data with CrimeMapping.com for the wider Newark region. The open data portal is part of the Police Foundation's Public Safety Open Data Project.

Newark Crime Tips and Warrant Checks

Anonymous tips for Newark cases go through several channels. The Newark crime tips page lays them out.

NPD also participates in the Neighbors by Ring app, where users share video with the department.

For a warrant check, run a name through the DELJIS Online Wanted Person Review. Results show open warrants from every Delaware court, including JoP Court 11 and JoP Court 2 which handle many Newark arraignments. Last name is required; first name narrows results.

FOIA Requests for Newark Recent Arrests

Because NPD police reports are exempt from FOIA, most arrest record requests go through the records unit. For other Newark recent arrests records, the city handles FOIA intake through its clerk's office.

University of Delaware records go through a separate FOIA process.

The UDel FOIA policy page has the written procedure. Requests go to the Office of General Counsel at 162 The Green, Room 112, Newark, DE 19716, fax (302) 831-3055, email FOIA-email@udel.edu. UDel has 15 business days to respond.

UDel FOIA fees mirror the state standard: first 20 pages free, then $0.10 per sheet. Color copies add $1 per sheet. Electronic data under 1 MB is free, with higher fees for larger files. An indigency waiver covers the first $100 of any fee.

Note: Per NPD records policy, police reports are not FOIA-releasable, so a subpoena or a victim's-copy request is needed for most Newark arrest documents.
